Despite only gaining traction with recreational anglers in recent years, circle hooks have long been used commercially, and it's easy to see why. When a fish takes a Phoxinus circle hook in its mouth, it is not immediately hooked. However as the fish moves away, the hook is designed to be pulled to the corner of the fish's mouth where it hooks cleanly and securely.

Research has shown a significant increase in the number of lip-hooked fish over conventional J shaped hooks. The study showed that offset circle hooks penetrated the lip 73% of the time, as opposed to 41% of the time with J-hooks. Not only is this important for fish welfare, but it makes recreational angling easier and more enjoyable when you know that more fish will be hooked in the correct place.
